Holding On to Light

My heart has felt so heavy lately. I find myself thinking of King Théoden in The Two Towers, when he looked out over the battlefield and whispered, “So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?”
I feel that question deeply. What can we do against such reckless hate? I don’t have an answer for that. Sometimes the weight of it feels too heavy to carry.
But then I remember these words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
And so, even when I don’t know what else to do, I choose to be light. I choose to show love. And I will raise my children to do the same.
